RECOGNIZING YOUR SKIN TYPE AND BEST PRACTICES FOR EACH

Writer's picture: Dr. Christine DierickxDr. Christine Dierickx

Do you know your skin type? It’s important to understand your skin’s unique characteristics to properly care for it. Generally, skin can be classified into five categories: oily, dry, combination, sensitive, and normal.

Here’s how to recognize your skin type:

  1. Oily Skin: Appears shiny, has enlarged pores, and is prone to acne and breakouts.

  2. Dry Skin: Often itchy, flaky, and rough, with a dull appearance and fine lines.

  3. Combination Skin: Oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and dry in other areas.

  4. Sensitive Skin: Easily irritated and prone to redness, itching, and stinging.

  5. Normal Skin: Has a balanced moisture level, is not prone to breakouts or redness, and has a smooth texture.

Understanding your skin type is crucial for choosing the right skincare products and routines. For example, if you have oily skin, you may want to avoid heavy moisturizers, while those with dry skin may benefit from a richer formula.

Here are our skincare tips and favourite ingredients for each skin type:

Oily Skin

  • Use a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser to avoid clogging pores.

  • Look for skincare products that contain salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinoids, which help unclog pores and reduce oil production.

  • Favourite ingredients: Salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid.

Dry Skin

  • Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser that doesn't strip the skin of its natural oils.

  • Look for skincare products that contain ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and shea butter, which help lock in moisture and repair the skin barrier.

  • Favourite ingredients: Ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, shea butter, and squalene.

Combination Skin

  • Use a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser to avoid clogging pores.

  • Look for lightweight moisturizers that won't weigh down oily areas but provide enough hydration for dry areas.

  • Favourite ingredients: Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs).

Sensitive Skin

  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser that won't irritate the skin.

  • Look for skincare products that contain soothing ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile, and oatmeal, which help calm down inflammation and redness.

  • Favourite ingredients: Aloe vera, chamomile, oatmeal, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides.

Normal Skin

  • Use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser that won't disrupt the skin's natural pH.

  • Look for skincare products that maintain skin hydration and support healthy skin function.

  • Favourite ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide, and vitamin C.
